When custom software makes sense

An off-the-shelf tool requires workarounds, spreadsheets act as a database or your team needs company-specific functionality. We first consider configuring and connecting existing software. Custom development is proposed when the required scope justifies its development and maintenance costs.

From design to everyday use

Stages reduce the cost of a wrong decision

We first agree on the main user task. We review the interface design, then launch a limited release for selected users. Further development follows observed usage and priorities, with costs assessed separately.

Acceptance includes maintainability

We check features, access controls, error behaviour and performance against the agreed workload. Backups, updates and infrastructure responsibilities are defined. Public website projects can also include accessibility and technical SEO.

Example: one shared case view

In a growing firm an employee searches several spreadsheets for a case status and the owner must confirm which version is current. We first define what decisions need that information and who updates it. If configuring an existing tool solves the issue, custom software may be unjustified. Where a specific workflow is needed, we design a limited scope and check it with users. This is an illustrative example for evaluation.

We hand over a description of the workflow, permissions and acceptance criteria. The first release serves the agreed task; only after observing use do we decide on additions and maintenance costs.

Owner decisions and team involvement

Bring the problem and a task that is awkward today to the initial 30-minute call. Later appoint a process owner and people to review the design and first release. You approve the objective, budget and acceptance criteria; you need not direct everyday system work. We set dates and your time commitment after diagnosis, based on integrations, data and pilot scope.

Pricing and costs after launch

Pricing depends on features, integrations, migration and environment requirements. Hosting, licences, support and development are listed separately. Source code handover does not remove maintenance needs, and rights reflect third-party libraries and services.
